Family Fun

Richmond is a vibrant tapestry of American history, with iconic sites that stretch from the revolutionary era to modern civic achievements. Explore landmarks like St. John’s Church, the Virginia State Capitol, and Hollywood Cemetery, where every step reveals layers of cultural evolution and architectural splendor.

Virginia State Capitol
Completed in 1788 and conceived by Thomas Jefferson, the Virginia State Capitol is one of the nation’s oldest continuously used legislative buildings. Modeled after the ancient Roman Maison CarrĂ©e, it has served as the seat of Virginia’s government — and as the Confederate capital during the Civil War — standing today as a striking example of early American Palladian architecture.

Hollywood Cemetery đź‘Ť
Established in 1847, Hollywood Cemetery is a 135‑acre “garden cemetery” overlooking the James River that doubles as an outdoor museum and accredited arboretum. Its rolling hills, Gothic Revival monuments, and the gravesites of two U.S. presidents create a serene yet powerful window into Richmond’s storied past.

St. John’s Church
Built in 1741, St. John’s Church is Richmond’s oldest surviving church and the historic site of Patrick Henry’s impassioned “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, it remains a living testament to the revolutionary fervor that shaped America’s founding.

Maymont đź‘Ť
Maymont is a 100‑acre Gilded Age estate featuring a meticulously preserved mansion, formal Italian and Japanese gardens, and a nature center. Bequeathed to the public by James and Sallie Dooley, it continues to enchant visitors with its blend of architectural elegance and immersive horticultural design.

Tredegar Iron Works
Once the largest ironworks in the Confederacy, Tredegar Iron Works manufactured half of the artillery used by Confederate forces and produced armor for the famed CSS Virginia. Today it’s preserved as a National Historic Landmark District and serves as the home of the American Civil War Museum.

Virginia War Memorial
Dedicated in 1955, the Virginia War Memorial honors more than 12,000 Virginians killed in conflicts from World War II through the Global War on Terrorism. Its Shrine of Memory and Education Center provide a solemn tribute and an engaging educational experience about the true cost of freedom.

Maggie Walker Museum
The Maggie Walker National Historic Site preserves the home of Maggie L. Walker — the first African‑American woman in U.S. history to charter and lead a bank.
